There are some things about Harmony where I look at her and think, Wow, she’s so much like me in that way. She has my chin, my soft curly hair, a forthcoming space between her front teeth, a very stubborn nature, she loves to bathe and brush her teeth, she loves to read, and has a deep love for Zebra print. Ok, so she may have had that last one forced upon her.
But then there are other things that really make me wonder whose child she is. I’ve compiled a list of the top three things Harmony and I don’t have in common:
1. She loves to clean. I know what you’re thinking, she’s just playing around. That may be true, but one of her favorite ways to play is to clean! Every single day she brings me the broom and mop and cries if I don’t use them. I’m not exaggerating. Of course she uses them too with my help. She also helps me make the bed every day. If she sees I’ve started without her she runs over to make sure she does her duty. I’m the type of person who really doesn’t enjoy cleaning. I don’t really know a lot of people who do, but still. Dishes are the worst. I’ve never seen a dishwasher in Lesotho, so we aren’t unique that we don’t have one. But, again, washing dishes by hand gets old really quickly. However, this is Harmony’s favorite. Again, this is no exaggeration. If she can see the dishes piling up in the sink she points and cries to do them. I’m not kidding. So, I pull up the chair for her to stand on, and we do them together. She has her sponge and I have mine and we get them done. She also dusts on a regular basis. In fact, just a few minutes ago she came up to me with her cloth wanting to make sure my computer screen was dust free!
2. She would much rather be cold than hot. I love being warm. Snuggling up in a warm hoodie sweatshirt under a thick blanket is the best! Add a cup of hot chocolate and you’ve got a winning combination! At night, I looove being warm. I always wear sweats and socks to bed. It helps me to feel cozy. But to Harmony, blankets are such a bother. Within 30 seconds of getting into bed, she’s kicked off anything and everything that covers her up. And forget about socks. She will not keep socks on to save her life. Harmony loves playing in water and even if she is soaked from head to toe she will not complain at all. She also loves playing in the rain and in puddles (when she can get away with it). I, on the other hand, do not like the rain. I’ll watch it from the window while I am perfectly warm and dry. To me, rain is a way to get involuntarily wet. No thanks.
3. She isn’t a fan of eating. This one really gets me. How can a person not enjoy eating? I love a nice tasty meal. Food is a passion of mine. I eat and snack throughout the whole day. I’m always looking for new recipes to try and in a typical week we have homemade banana bread, cookies, or some other goodies. Harmony doesn’t eat a variety of things and she eats the tiniest little portions. She avoids the spoon and fork with a vengeance. It’s as if I’m forcing her to eat pickled onions. Luckily things have gotten a little bit better lately, but she is definitely categorized as a picky eater.
I’m so glad that there are things we don’t have in common. She definitely has a bit of mommy and quite a bit of daddy in her, but she also is uniquely Harmony! She has a classic Harmony look when she’s serious and a cute smile when she’s proud of herself. She is sweet, sassy, and funny!
My Harmony is beautifully unique.
